The type of pesticides used by farmers included 9 fungicides, 6 herbicides, 1 bactericide, 1 insect growth regulator, and 37
insecticides (Table 3).
The highest number of active ingredients was used in Karnataka (41) followed by Gujarat (35) and West Bengal (31).
The total number of different active ingredients was 45 in cabbage and 55 in cauliflower.
The most commonly used active ingredients were the fungicides mancozeb and carbendazim, and the insecticides cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, indoxacarb, endosulfan, dichlorvos, spinosad, triazophos, and methomyl, and the insect
growth regulator, novaluron.
Other active ingredients farmers used are listed in Table 3.
Ten of the active ingredients (16.4% of all pesticides reported by all farmers in this survey) are listed as extremely or highly hazardous (classes Ia and Ib) by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2005).
