Creatine is the oldest and most widely used performance-enhancing nutritional supplement on the market. Due to this, it is also the most heavily researched and criticized. Since 1992 there have been thousands of experiments conducted and research articles written exploring the benefits and negative side effects of creatine. Most people who have used creatine know its benefits in regards to athletic performance. A large portion of the population, however, know nothing of the side effects, long term effects, or possible alternative benefits outside of athletics. The purpose of this article is to explore its potential uses and to clarify the misconceptions, myths, and rumors of creatine supplementation while also addressing some of the more valid concerns with its use.
