Christopher Brumfit (1940-2006) was Professor of Education with reference to Language and Linguistics, Head of the Research and Graduate School of Education, and Director of the Centre for Language in Education at the University of Southampton, UK.
He was a former Chair of the British Association for Applied Linguistics and Vice-President of AILA, and an Academician of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. Between 1978 and 2006 he published thirty books and many papers on Language Teaching, Literature Teaching, and Language Policy in Education.
Among Christopher Bumfit's works are: Individual Freedom in Language Teaching, The Communicative Approach to Language Teaching and Literature and Language Teaching, all published by Oxford University Press.
An obituary was published in Applied Linguistics Journal issue 27/2.
