Soil Pollution in Turkey and Remediation Methods
Abstract
Turkey possesses highly diverse geographical, geological and climatic features resulting in the formation of different kinds of soils. Agricultural, industrial and mining activities, together with the domestic wastes, are polluting these rich and varied types of soils. The situation is further complicated by the tremendous losses arising from different types of erosion in the country. The problem of degradation of soils began in the twentieth century like other countries. Great risks were taken by combining the mechanization in agriculture with rapid industrialization neglecting the expected environmental impacts. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to enlighten the current status of soil pollution in Turkey, the factors effecting soil contamination and erosion, vis-à-vis the methods used for soil remediation and conservation of this natural resource, and the precautions taken to resolve these problems.
