Abstract
This qualitative research aimed to collect knowledge and folk medicine wisdom, identify specialised
medicinal plants, and study treatment methods by a folk healer, Mr. Khai Kosin who live in Rattaphum District,
Songkhla Province. Data was collected from patients who have treated by Mr. Khai Kosin in August 2008 to
December 2009 by indepth interview, participant observation and non-participant observation and analyzed
by descriptions and statistics. The data was collected from 105 patients and divided them into six groups of
diseases: 1) bone and ligament disorder 2) uterine prolapse 3) fever caused by bile disorder (jaundice) 4) fever
caused by wind element disorder (menopause) 5) fever caused by water element disorder (Relapsing fever), and
6) fever caused by blood disorder (fever overlays menstruation). The most common diseases were found in
these 105 patients were bone and ligament disorders (28.58%) and uterine prolapse (28.58%). The mostly of uterine
prolapse patients (36.67 % of all 30 patients) were 21 to 30 years old, rubber plantation occupation. Bone and
ligament disorders and uterine prolapsed were cured by folk massage while other diseases were cured by herbal
medicines. The frequenthy employed herbal medicines recipes: were 1) postpartum recipe 2) post menstrual
recipe 3) recipe for fever caused by water element disorder 4) anti-migraine recipe 5) recipe for menstrual
disorder 6) uterine anti-inflammatory recipe 7) anti-diabetes recipe 8) anti-dermatologic diseases recipe 9) recipe
for fever overlays menstruation 10) antihypertensive recipe, and 11) recipe for fever caused by bile disordered.
Forty four medicinal plants were found in these recipes and the five regularly used plants 5 types; were
1) Melastoma malabathricum L. 2) Urena lobata L. 3) Piper nigrum L. 4) Mimusops elengi L. and 5) Melodorum
siamense (Scheff.) Ban. Frequency in which each accounted for 4.08 % of all 44 species of herbal medicines.
