Abstract
1. Points out that most career development research and efforts to provide career education begin in adolescence when an individual approaches the point of a career decision. It is argued that attention should also be given to much younger children. American literature is reviewed that shows that even 3–5 yr olds are aware of and generally accept the world of work, the prestige hierarchy for occupations, and stereotypes of who holds which jobs. Career awareness in young children is discussed in terms of theoretical approaches to occupational choice, concepts of career awareness, information and attitudes about careers, the developmental course of career awareness, and early influences on career awareness.
