3.2. Callus induction
Some cultured anthers expanded noticeably within 10 days of introduction into culture; approximately 20 days later, some anther surfaces cracked from the middle, and small white or cream calli were observed (Fig. 2A). As the calli grew, their color became more yellow by 60 days of culture (Fig. 2C). Calli incubated for three months, had three different morphologies (Fig. 2D and E). The first was yellowish-white, with translucent, watery callus. The second type was green, granular, and compact. The third was reddish-yellow, soft, and friable.
