Active learning as ownership of learning. Teachers reported that the best active learning contexts had been teaching practice and studies which were connected with research studies, either as a part of the Master's thesis studies of primary school teachers or as a part of the subject-specific research seminars of secondary school teachers: "The best part was a master's thesis with independent inquiry, close connection with teaching practice". Also , portfolios, journals, writing reviews and new modes of examinations, such as group discussions, were mentioned. Students also described opportunities for self-evaluation as a positive experience. The common feature of all these activities was a feeling of ownership. The students had opportunities to process knowledge, to produce something individually or in groups and to self-evaluate their product or their own development.
