Australian recreational fishers target various marine crustaceans (Henry and Lyle, 2003; King, 2007). One species for which there are concerns about unaccounted fishing mortality is the blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus), which is widely distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific (Lai et al., 2010). Recently, using morphometric, morphological and genetic characteristics, Lai et al.(2010) revised P. pelagicus into four species, including Portunus armatus, Portunus reticulatus and Portunus segnis. However, for consistency, and because this revision did not assess reproductive compatibility and was not conclusive, in this study we report on P. pelagicus.
