The next morning they woke up to hear the birds singing. The birds led the children to a
beautiful little house all made of ginger bread, with windows of spun sugar. The children started eating the
house when an old woman came out and cried, “Come in, come in, children I have plenty for you to eat.”
Now, the old woman was really a wicked witch who ate little children. The next day she put Hansel into a
cage and made Gretel work hard all the time cleaning the house. At last, the witch decided she would eat
Hansel. She made Gretel build a big fire in the oven, then she said, “Gretel, is the fire hot enough?”
“Please come and see yourself,” said Gretel and when the witch came near Gretel pushed her in the oven
and shut the door quickly. Gretel ran and let Hansel out of his cage. “The witch is dead,” they cried, we
are saved.” The cruel stepmother had died and the woodcutter had been looking everywhere for
children. He was so happy to have them back to live with him.
