The mesopelagic is a world of twilight.In the upper part of the mesopelagic the dim light during the day is enoughto see by, perhaps even enough to read a newspaper. There is not, however,enough light to support phytoplankton. As depth increases, of course, the seagets darker. Eventually, typically at adepth of about 1,000 m (3,300 ft), thereis no light at all. The absence of lightmarks the bottom of the mesopelagiczone, which thus stretches from the bot-tom of the epipelagic, around 200 m(660 ft) deep, to about 1,000 m deep
