Youth were categorised as treatment dropouts based on clinician coded reason for discharge. At discharge, clinicians identified up to three reasons for discharge out of a list of 14. All discharge reasons were classified by the authors as associated with either treatment dropout or planned discharge. The most common reason for dropout was ‘child/family chose to discontinue’ and the most common reason for planned discharge was ‘services to be provided by another agency’. Other frequently used discharge reasons classified as treatment dropout were ‘child/family did not participate in treatment’, ‘agency initiated discontinuation’, and ‘unable to follow-up with family/client’. Other frequently used discharge reasons classified as planned discharge were ‘presenting problem resolved and client stable’, ‘completed treatment goals/symptoms abated’, and ‘client’s condition requires lower level of care’.
