By middle school, students are expected to write complete sentences, consistently adhere to basic conventions of written language such as indention at the beginning of a paragraph, use of a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and ending with a punctuation mark. By high school, students are expected to write essays in response to test questions, write research papers in a variety of courses, and increasingly demonstrate command of complex sentence structure and mechanics. They are expected to produce both quantity and quality as they adapt their writing for a variety of audiences (National Council of Teachers of English, 2010).
