Abst ract In order to better un derstand the alternati on of
ge ne rati o ns tha t ch ara cte rize s h apl oid – dip loid lif e cy cle s,
we assessed the existence of ecolog ical differences between
the two phases (hapl oid gametophyt e and diploid tetraspor-ophyte ) inGra cilaria ch ilensis , a rhodop hyte with a typical
Polysi phonia-type life cycle. We investig ated the effect of
light intensit y and salinit y on viabi lity and growth of both
phases at different ontoge netic stage s: juveni les and adults.
In our study, the survi val of juveni le gametophyt es (n) was
higher than the survi val of juveni le tetr asporo phytes (2n)
despi te cult ure condition s; ho wever, low salinity had greater
effect on carpos pores (2n) than on tetraspor es (n). On the
other hand, a complex interaction between sali nity a nd light
intensit y withi n each life history phase generat ed observ ed
differences between juveni le grow th rates. Low ligh t was
shown to trigger early onset of alteration of the holdfast
growing pattern. In addit ion, adult tetraspor ophyte s show ed,
despi te the condition s, a faster vegeta tive grow th than fe-mal e a nd mal e ga met op hyte s. The se differe nce s b etw ee n
phases could have led to the complete domi nance of tetra-sporophyte fragm en ts of fronds observed in G . c h il en s is
farms. We hypoth esize that Chilea n fishers could have un-know ingly selected for tetraspor ophyte thal li durin g d omes-tication of the speci es, thus enhancing the natur al trend of
tetrasporophytes dominance already present in estuarine
natur al popula tions of free-float ing plant s
