Salvador Dali was significantly influenced by Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, namely his classic piece The Interpretation of Dreams (Goff, 2008). His detailed theoretical work regarding the conscious and unconscious mind states (specifically the unconscious) were the basis of his Surrealist adventures. According to Goff (2008), Surrealism is a literary and artistic movement originating in the 1920s that involved expressing the inner workings of the mind through art and writing. Through Surrealism, Dali was able to express visual imagery without any conscious control in an effort to free him from any constraints of reason (Masters, 1995). In an attempt to justify and theoretically explain Freud’s dream concepts, Dali regularly expressed his waking dreams onto canvas (Etherington-Smith, 1992b).
