Phonics is defined as "the set of relationships between written letters and the spoken sounds that those letters represent. Closely related to phonics is 'phonemic awareness', a child's understanding of the idea that spoken words can be broken down into constituent sounds" (Research Regarding, n.d., p. 1). Decades of researching phonics shows that all children benefit from the
phonemic awareness being taught explicitly, even those children that already have some understanding of phonemic awareness. Phonics improves students' word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension (Instruction, n.d.)
