Abstract: Population increase, economic progress, expansion in urban areas, rapid industrial development, and
rising standards of living have contributed to a sharp rise in solid waste generation in India. In most cities of the
developing countries inefficient management and disposal of solid waste is a cause of degradation of the
environment. It calls for a renewed thought towards a subtle waste management system. The present paper gives
information about MSW generation rate, characteristics and disposal methods in Salem town.. Municipal solid
wastes of the city are presently disposed as open landfills at four distinct sites namely Veerapandi, Kitchipalayam,
Korimedu and Old Busstand areas. The leaches of the open dump yards directly contaminate the groundwater and
surface water resources leading unsuitability of water for drinking at many places. Hence, a detailed study has been
carried out using geographical information system (GIS) to understand the spatial variation of surface water and
groundwater quality. The concentration of physical and chemical constituents in the water samples were compared
with the Bureau of Indian Standard and World Health Organization standard to know the suitability o water for
drinking. The indicates that the water quality parameters exceed the permissible limits for drinking at many
locations leading the water unsuitable for drinking. The spatial variation of groundwater quality parameters was also
plotted using GIS.
