The midcarpal joint is a subset of the intercarpal joint complex that is situated between the proximal and distal rows of carpal bones. It is a compound joint divided into lateral and medial parts. The medial compartment of the joint is a saddle joint formed by the capitate and hamate with and the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetral bones. A second saddle joint occurs where the trapezium and trapezoid articulate with the scaphoid – the so-called lateral compartment.
