This section illustrates the case study of planning and scheduling functions of a German auto maker. During interviews of senior managers at Sales and Operations Planning and Manufacturing, we were informed that all functions had been used in a similar way for more than five years. During the 1990s the last general change of the planning and scheduling landscape was done through a large scale software and process implementation project, which introduced an online order bank system. The company claims to follow a highly customer oriented build-to-order production paradigm and offers a high customization of their products. Several options are offered in the configuration process, which are also offered in certain packages as a mixed option bundling with single options and packages alike. Fig. 3 illustrates the planning and scheduling landscape which we drew together with company experts.
