Rule-based errors include mis-classified situations leading to the selection of a wrong course of action. Errors at the knowledge-based level occur in situations demanding
conscious attention, and are a result of failed problem-solving and/or a
lack of system knowledge. A strength of the SRK model is that it distinguishes
levels of attentional control consistent with the controlled/
automatic distinction of Shiffrin & Schneider (1977), where the skill category
can be seen as being minimally under the control of conscious
attention, while rule and knowledge-based performance call on controlled
processing to a greater extent.
