Permanent secretary for transport SoithipTraisuth said on October 17 that the SRT has signed a contract with BBC Joint Venture to purchase new air-conditioned train carriages.
PLANS ON TRACK
Procurement of the carriages was approved by the cabinetin 2010. It was part of the government's 176 billion bath infrastructure development scheme for 2013-14. Soithip said SRT is in dire need of new carriages because existing air-con sleeper accomodation is old and insufficient to serve rising passenger numbers. The new carriages will also complement the goverment's sail investment plans, since dual tracks are being constructed on several routes, Soithip said.
