Interestingly, others have indicated a fertility benefit to ewes when thawed ram semen was extended in 30% seminal
plasma (Maxwell et al., 1999). This disparity of in vivo results, albeit across species, showing no effect of 10% boar
seminal plasma but a benefit from 30% ram seminal plasma supports the current results. Relatively little effect of 10%
seminal plasma was found on measures of boar sperm quality but there was a marked effect of 50% seminal plasma.
It is evident from the present studies that whatever the active principal(s) is in seminal plasma that impacts sperm
function in vitro, and presumably in vivo, the effect is concentration limited.
