Ost & Kjex’s Cajun Lunch is a mixture of funky disco and soulful vocal house with an offbeat attitude. Pay attention to the lyrics and you’ll soon notice: cheese and crackers are a recurring theme. The Norwegian duo are, in fact, fixated on fromage! (Their last album is titled Some Cheese but not all Cheese comes from the Moon.)
Ost’s falsetto is a little reminiscent of Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters. The album often has a quirky sensibility similar to theirs. But, musically, it also has a more grown-up, complex side.
The title track begins with a slapping bass and R&B back-up vocals, joined by castanets and dramatic strings – an explosively funky introduction. Similar disco sounds follow later with ‘Continental Lover’.
