Opium During the crop season 2009-2010, total areas of opium cultivation, which were found in 8 provinces in the north of Thailand, were only 1804 raisequal to 288.65 hectares compared to 211.12 hectares during 2008- 2009 crop season. Opium was grown in Thailand by hill tribe people for local consumption only. Opium eradication in this year was carried out regularly by the Third Army Area-RTA, Border Patrol Po- lice Regions 3 and Provincial/ District Operation Centers for Combating Drugs covering the area of 1738 raisequal to 278 hectares (almost 97% of the total opium cultivation area). Opium cultivation density was mostly found in Omkoy district in Chiang Mai Province, which was the same as that in the last year.
