A considerable portion of the government budget is assigned to health care,[161] and Iceland ranks 11th in health care expenditures as a percentage of GDP[162] and 14th in spending per capita.[163] Over all, the country’s health care system is one of the best performing in the world, ranked 15th by the World Health Organization.[164] According to an OECD report, Iceland devotes far more resources to healthcare than most industrialised nations. As of 2009, Iceland had 3.7 doctors per 1,000 people (compared with an average of 3.1 in OECD countries) and 15.3 nurses per 1,000 people (compared with an OECD average of 8.4).[165]
