Canadian culture very much values the role of the individual. We feel we have a right to our individuality, we are measured on our personal merits and even our teams sports celebrate the Most Valued Player.
Other cultures have a more collective view of society with individuals seeing themselves as one part of a larger whole, whether in the workplace, the family, by tribe or political or spiritual affiliation.
These individuals can feel out of place in an individualistic culture. In the workplace they may feel the need to consult a 'chain of command' before making a decision and may also feel it is inappropriate to voice an opinion without being invited. In many such cultures espousing one's own virtues would be considered bragging and offensive. This can have a negative effect especially in interview situations.
