Since the early 1990s, GPS technology has gained increasing
interest in the scientific community.
A milestone has been the establishment of the International
GPS Service in 1994 (Dow et al., 2009), enabling
highly precise geodetic applications. However, the use of
GPS in offshore applications has been limited by various
factors, mainly maintenance costs, the bandwidth for data
transfer and the accuracy and reliability of kinematic GPS
processing over large distances.
