Mayer, 1912 as the identifier of B. ovata. Scientists from South America still use the name B. ovata Chamisso and Eysenhardt, 1821 thus following Mayer (1912) (Mianzan, 1999; Oliveira and Migotta, 2006). Harbison et al. (Harbison et al., 1978) first mentioned this species as Beroe ovata Bosc, but afterwards the first author (2001) indicated that it was Beroe ovata sensu Mayer, 1912 which was introduced into the Black Sea.
