Balance of benefits and harms: The possible risks associated with discharge within 24 hours
of birth include neonatal readmission for morbidity and mothers stopping breastfeeding
earlier than recommended. There seems to be no undue risk of adverse outcomes with
discharge between 24 and 48 hours after birth. However, this evidence comes from
research studies in which discharge at 24–48 hours was combined with home visits for
continued postnatal care.
