Though pigments were primarily used as a coloring agent in various industries, from the past decade,
researchers have focused the usage of pigments from coloring agents to antioxidants in
pharmaceutical and food industries (Prakash et al, 2001). Actinomycetes are the biotechnologically
valuable bacteria which are well exploited for secondary metabolites (Balagurunathan and
Radhakrishnan, 2010). Naturally they are colorful organisms which produce variety of intra and
extracellular pigment including melanin with different biological functions. The present study
reports the isolation, identification ad antioxidant activity of melanin pigment produced
by Streptomyces species isolated from garden soil, Nagpur district, India.
