Table 3, it is observed that more extensive residual biomass processing
(from scenario 1 to 4) increases overall bioenergy production.
Beside extensive residual biomass processing, year round
bioenergy production also increased the bioenergy production
(year 1–3). However, when year round bioenergy production could
not be possible, more extensive biomass processing could not provide
enhanced bioenergy production. Therefore, year round bioenergy
production has an importance to increase bioenergy
production. Year round bioenergy production has no significant
impact on the NRPER and GHG intensity (kg CO2 eq./GJ bioenergy)
(Table 3). Hence, effectiveness of extent of biomass processing
should be accessed along with the type of operation (year round
vs intermittent) and technological breakthrough.
This study therefore, emphasizes the importance of technological
breakthrough as well as recycling of nutrients through the
residual biomass management. After oil extraction, discarding
the algal biomass negates the numerous recycling of nutrients
and associated increase in algal biomass production
