1. Introduction
The deformationandfracturebehaviorsofstructuralmaterials
arealwaysthemainaspectsforitsperformance.Preliminary
researchtorevealthedeformationandfracturemechanismgen-
erallyaccomplishedviaacomprehensiveunderstandingofmacro-
scopical deformationfeatures,fractographsandsomestatic
mechanical propertiessuchastensilestrengthandfracturetough-
ness [1–5]. Withthedevelopmentofmaterialsscienceand
electron microscopy,areal-timeandhighresolutionobservation
of thedeformationandfractureprocessinmaterials,especiallyfor
them withinmicro-nanoscales,becomesavailableandincreas-
ingly receiveswidespreadattentions [6]. Inthepastfewdecades,
by meansofinsitustrainingtransmissionelectronmicroscopy
(TEM) methodsandrelatedcomputersimulations,manyresearch-
ers focusedonthedeformationandfracturebehaviorsofpure
metals [7–14], metallicalloys [7,15–17] andnanomaterials(includ-
ing nanocrystalline [18,19], nanotubes [20], nanowires [21] and
micro- ornanopillars [22,23]) torevealcharacteristicsand
mechanisms ofplasticdeformation,dislocationactivities,crack
propagationaswellasthecrack-tipsubstructures.Insitustraining
TEM methods,whichdirectly,continuouslyandmicroscopically
show thedynamicalprocessesduringdeformationandfracture,
can effectivelyavoidtheprobablemisunderstandingsinducedby
static observationandtheoreticalspeculation [6], thusareofgreat
importance tofullyunderstandthedeformationandfracture
behaviorsofvariousmaterialsatmicro-nanooratomiclevels.
