Lesson SOC 15
Task: Throw adhesive darts.
Prerequisites: ADT 3, COG 6, SEN 13
Concept: This activity involves both fine-motor and gross-motor actions. Although not a required prerequisite, the task of tossing a beanbag (SOC 14) should be mastered first because it requires fewer fine-motor abilities. The main reason for adhesive types of darts rather than the standard needle type is safety. Secondary advantages of this exercise include number identification and hand-eye coordination.
Behavioral Objective: When presented with an adhesive dart or ball designed for a dartboard-like target and requested to throw it, the student will throw five darts toward the target with a 50% accuracy rate of hitting the target from a distance of at least 5 feet for 20 trials.
Materials: A set of adhesive darts with a target.
Task Analysis:
1. Place a dart in the student's hand and place the target immediately below the student so that he or she can simply drop the dart to hit the board. Physically guide the student if needed.
2. Move the target to about 1 foot in front of the student and guide the student to throw the dart to the target. Concentrate on forward arm movement and release.
3. Continue Step 2, gradually increasing the distance up to 5 feet.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all physical guidance until only verbal prompts are needed, and increase the number of darts to five.
5. Introduce the activity in a group format and continue until the objective is met.
