Perceptual subitizing is, when shown a group, one can state how many without grouping or counting. Young students, as well as adults, can usually subitize 3 to 4 items perceptually. Perceptual subitizing is thought to be fundamental to counting and cardinality (knowing that the last number said in the sequence is the “how many” number).
