Huiet and Helen Paul live on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, U.S. One unfortunate day in 1989,
Hurricane Hugo destroyed their home. They had to build their home. They had to build a new home
.But they didn’t choose a regular home. Their son, George, designs and builds dome homes .He
helped them to build a dome home. They call their dome home “Eyes of the storm. “It has four floors,
giving 3,500 square feet of living space. It cost about $600,000 to build.
They chose a dome home because it is very strong .It weight almost 450 tons. The upper floors are not
held up by the building below ,which means from the structure .The Pauls know they should be safe
in bad weather .Special shutters close to protect the home when there is a hurricane .It takes just 15
seconds! On the first floor is a parking area. An elevator goes up to the entrance on the next floor.
This is the main living area. It includes kitchen, living room, dining room, and a large entertainment
area. A fireplace on the inside even becomes a barbecue on the outside! There are also three
bathrooms and two bedrooms. All bedrooms have views of ocean. On the next floor are the main
bedroom and bathroom, plus another entertainment area. The Eye’s top floor is a loft with a sofa and a
huge skylight. “Mom loves to relax and read up here,’’ says George,“and the kids love to sleep up
here. They like the height and the skylight.”
Visitors to the Eye of the Storm love it .It’s so unusual! People say the dome home makes them. “Feel
alive,” and that it’s fun.”
What do you think? Could you live in a dome home?
