As the widespread call for educational reform in the United states has gathered impetus in recent years, one of the targets of school system change has been teacher tenure. Public and academic criticism of abuses generated by state teacher tenure laws has existed in some form throughout the latter half of the twetieth century (see Supplementary Reading). Here are some viewpoints that have been directed the demand for tenure reform or abolition. Tenure discontent has grown in volumn in widespread disappointment with the quality of teaching in public education, and in emerging political endeavors to change the conditions under which incompeted teachers gain employment protection.
