T. atroviride SC1 is a fast-growing fungus that has no negative effects on plants. In fact, plants treated with Trichoderma spp.usually show more vigorous growth than untreated plants(Benìtez et al., 2004; Vinale et al., 2004) because the fungus
promotes nutrient assimilation. Trichoderma spp. are probably better suited to be applied using barks as carrier than other
biocontrol agents (i.e., Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp.), because they quickly colonize the dead wood and then remain viable for along time in the soil. This work shows that bark represents a optimal substrate for the development and colonization of T. atroviride SC1, which was in turn isolated from decayed wood of hazelnut.
