In 2008, each of the 3 work unit designations added a master's degree in nursing level. Several factors resulted in this modification: (1) the organi zation's desire to retain master's degree-prepare RNs in direct patient care roles, (2) requests from many nurses with MSN to be recognized for their additional education and contribution while re- maining in a staff RN role, and (3) an increased prevalence of this practice in the marketplace. RNs who have MSN or doctorate in nursing submitted proof of their degrees and were moved to the MSN level. There are now 9 salary ranges for the 3 types of work unit schedules and 3 levels of nursing education (Table 1 and Figure 2)
