This research aims to investigate the perceived image of risk and safety in Thailand through an
international lens, to analyze websites, which are popular among backpackers, and from international
backpackers who are still travelling in Thailand. The research also aims to explore the level of risk
perception and risk prevention of international backpackers in Thailand, to examine the relationship
between them, to investigate factors affecting risk perception and risk prevention of these tourists, and to
explore private and state policy about the perception of risk prevention and protection in Thailand.
Both quantitative and qualitative data collecting methods were employed with the use of selfadministered
surveys given to the international backpackers in Thailand as a quantitative method.
Netnography and in-depth interviews of policy makers were used as qualitative methods. With the
investigation through the website, it was found that Thailand has a very positive image, which was in
accordance with the survey given to international backpackers currently travelling in Thailand. In relation
to the risk perception and risk prevention, the result of the study indicated that the overall level of risk
perception and prevention of international backpackers about travelling in Thailand was low. Regarding
the relationship of risk perception and prevention, it was found that they were correlated to each other.
Within the investigation of factors affecting risk perception and risk prevention, it appeared that there
were no factors affecting the overall perception and prevention. Lastly, the state and private tourism
organisations declared that they always give the right information about travelling in Thailand safely in
different kinds of situations.
