absence of nicotine in the tobacco liqueur was also proven during
the GC/MS screening, where the nicotine peak was not observed
even when the specific ions of nicotine were extracted.
Despite the fact that nicotine was not detected, some major
compounds could be seen in different regions of the 1H NMR spectrum
(Fig. 4), for example, traces of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)
(at d 9.46 ppm) in the low-field region, several signals of sugars
(e.g. at d 5.40 ppm, at d 5.62 ppm, at d 5.22 ppm and at d
4.64 ppm) in the mid-field region, as well as higher alcohols
(d 1.80–1.40 ppm) in the high-field region. No health-relevant
compounds were detectable using non-targeted NMR and GC/MS
screening. The major peaks (assessed as a percentage in relation
to the sum of all peak areas set as 100%) in the GC/MS analysis
of volatiles were anethole (28%), limonene (9%) and neophytadiene
(20%) (Fig. 6).
