The fact that Australians are in favour of water conservation and water efficient appliances but do
not quite put their money where their mouth is presents a major opportunity for water management in
Australia by highlighting that a range of solutions could be adopted simultaneously. While supplysided
measures, such as large scale water augmentation projects are required as an emergency solution,
the results of this study indicate that there is still significant potential for water conservation.
Australians are open to the idea, but public policy makers may need to provide people with more
information to change their attitudes as well as develop incentives which will reduce the financial
burden and possibly reduce the perceived inconvenience of adopting water saving alternatives in their
everyday behaviours. This can be achieved through the further development of public policy measures
