The common burdens on families include restrictions on social life financial difficulties and emotional reactions, such as distress, and worrying this is in addition to the stigma of mental illness. However the concept of burden has been criticized because it attributes negative consequences in the caregiver's life to the patient's without taking into consideration factors like normal life changes and the personality of the caregivers. Moreover, caring for the mentally ill can be a source of positive transformation in a person's life and can provide caregivers with a sense of inner strength and satisfaction'. To overcome the above limitions , the concept of the caregiving experience has been proposed Szmukler. conceptualized the experience of caregiving as the appraisal of caregiving' a construct existing in the stress-appraisal-coping framework'. This model suggests that the experience of caregiving results from an interaction between the relative's illness and factors in the carer's external and internal world. The patient's illness, associated behavior, disabilities and the perceived disruptions of the carer's life are appraised as stressors by the carer.
