INTRODUCTION
Birds show varying degrees of adaptations to their
food which has led to much theoretical attention
on food selection and feeding methods (Wilson
1971; Welty 1975). Correlations between bill morphology
and seed selection are well documented
for granivorous birds (Grant 1981; Price 1987).
Such birds have certain advantages for the study
of feeding behaviour, e.g. simple, uniform,
‘packeted’ dietary items, not possessed by other
trophic guilds (Grant 1981), while the physical
characteristics of seed are readily categorized.
Certain correlates between aspects of bill structure
and the physical characteristics of the food among
seed consumers can be expected.
Birds with differently shaped bills require different
handling times for a range of seeds and this
affects their feeding preferences. Such resource
partitioning has considerable implications for
granivorous species with overlapping ranges
(Darain 1959, 1964; Grant 1981, 1986;Weiner 1995).
Optimal foraging theory predicts food intake
should maximize energy gain per unit handling
time (Keating et al. 1992). Studies recognize two
components of foraging behaviour: search time
and handling time. Bill structure affects foraging
efficiency (Benkman 1987), as handling ability is
correlated with bill size (Abbott et al. 1975). Granivorous
birds may handle seeds in two ways: they
may swallow seeds whole (doves) or remove the
outer husk (finches) (Welty 1975). Handling time
depends primarily on whether birds husk the seed
or not. Seed-husking birds are able to exert sufficient
pressure to crack the seed coat and require
proportionally more force to open seeds as seed
size increases (Lederer 1975). There is a significant
positive correlation between the relative force
applied by the bills of granivorous birds, and bill
dimension. The force increases at about the same
rate as bill width, somewhat slower than bill
depth, and slower yet than bill length, which
doubles when the force is increased by 100–150 %
(Lederer 1975). Small morphological differences in
bill dimensions determine whether, and the
efficiency with which, birds husk seeds (Keating
et al. 1992).
Species with large bills husk large seeds faster
than species with small bills, and husk some large
