3. Environmental movements and place-making
In recent years, a relational understanding of space and place
has become predominant in human geography and the social
sciences more generally (Castree, 2004; Escobar, 2001; Massey,
2004; Pierce et al., 2010; Routledge, 2003; Thrift, 2006). This ‘‘relational
turn’’ emphasises the process of producing both space and
place, and thus, an understanding of these categories as processes.
For Noel Castree, place entails:
no particular geographical scale. Rather, it refers to any area
that derives its character, in part, from its willing or unwilling
engagement with something ‘bigger’ or ‘wider’ than itself: variously,
the ‘national’, the ‘transnational’ or the ‘global’.
