It is a sad fact that in the last few years, touring cyclists who come to Thailand, after surviving many hot spots around the world during their travels on a bicycle, are mown down by vehicles. The latest crash in Chiang Mai early this month proves now that Thai cyclists are not exempt from the carnage that occurs daily on Thai roads.
The police and judiciary have a lot to answer for in relation to Thailand’s high accident rate, as their inaction is disgraceful. I note that the drivers in the incidents involving a Chilean cyclist and a British couple received suspended jail sentences and a paltry fine. Compare those sentences to that of a mentally ill 65-year-old woman who was charged with lese majeste and received a one-year jail sentence, and the courts look ridiculous.
Thailand’s distinguished police force, who on the day can provide hundreds of personnel to block roads during the parades of distinguished guests driving at great speed along highways, are nowhere to be found when speeding drunk drivers with over-loaded trucks rocket down the highway creating mayhem.
Politicians and newspapers bleat all the time during Songkran and New Year about the horrific road toll during these holiday periods and nothing gets done. Many countries during holiday periods target drivers by using radar guns and alcohol testing units, and the cost of these is far cheaper than treating the thousands of injured victims who flood Thai hospitals during these periods.
