Existing-cropping pattern and return from crops
The existing cropping acreage and corresponding gross and net returns of crop i in season j, under kth type of agriculture of the study area are shown in Table 1. The net return from the cultivation of the crops per unit area of farming was calculated by considering the potential crop yield, market price of crops and cost of production (excluding the cost of irrigation water). Table 1 also presents the crop wise gross return and water productivity with respect to different seasons and type of agricultures of the region. The required data for both the monsoon and winter crops were collected from the Departments of Agriculture, Statistics, and Economics at the Balasore district offices, Government of Orissa, India.
