Biomass recalcitrance, the natural resistance of plant cell walls to microbial and enzymatic deconstruction, increases the cost
of conversion of cellulose to glucose. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance. Not surprisingly, tree species
such as poplar and willow have higher lignin contents than grasses (Table 3).
