Although in the oriental formulation, the herbs are used in their original forms, in many cases, they are pre-treated in order to enhance their therapeutic efficacy. The traditional herbal pre-treatment processes include roasting, steaming, frying, or salt water preservation. Fermentation can also be regarded as a sort of pre-treatment process in traditional oriental medicine. Red yeast rice, sojae semen praeparatum, Massa medica fermentata are some of the examples produced following fermentation as a pretreatment process.
