Natural Agathis has been noted to be resistant to wind-throw in Celebes, a tap root grows deeper than 2·5 m and there are in addition massive laterals extending over 10 m (de Leeuw 1936) A. obtusa in the New Hebrides is wind-resistant (sect. 3·2). A.macrophyl/a is probably at least to some extent resistant in the Santa Cruz islands (Whitmore 1966), as are Agathis in New Caledonia (several species) and Fiji (A. vitiensis). All these four island groups are subject to periodic cyclones.
