Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, can cause
fatigue, tremors, anxiety, palpitations, intolerance of heat,
sweating, weight loss, increased pulse rate, diarrhoea,
and light or no menstrual flow (Jameson & Weetman
2012). It is usually treated with anti-thyroid drugs
during pregnancy and lactation. These are thioamide
compounds that inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis.
Radioactive iodine or surgery are alternative treatments
for thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism), particularly if it is
long standing or difficult to control with medication.
